Joshua Lynch (cello) and Sally Birkett (piano) play pieces by Saint-Saens , Beethoven and others.
Recipient of the Freda Dinn and Ida Marbett Award, St James Chamber Music Prize and the Musiciens Entre Guerre et Paix, Joshua Lynch is a passionate devotee of chamber music and has already enjoyed a diverse and creative career. Joshua studied with Emma Ferrand and Gillian Today at the Royal Northern College of Music and then continued his studies with Ursula Smith at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Joshua is the cellist of the Celia Quartet, who are mentored by the Quartetto di Cremona and Simon Rowland-Jones. The quartet are part of the ‘Le Dimore del Quartetto’ and ‘Lincoln Center Stage’ networks and have enjoyed several tours in Italy, Sicily and the UK. Most recent highlights have included performing at the North Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and performing Schumann’s Piano Quintet as part of the Festival Note di un Sogno with Stefania Cafaro in Umbria. Joshua has performed at the Wigmore Hall, The Crucible (MitR), St Martin-in-the-Field and Salisbury International Arts Festival.
Joshua is the cellist of the Vectis Duo with his duo partner, pianist Sally Birkett, where they enjoy a busy concert schedule. He is also the Principal cellist of the Cambridge Philharmonic and has played with the London Symphony Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia.
Away from performing Joshua is a passionate teacher and holds the position of cello tutor at the Stephen Perse Foundation in Cambridge and is a chamber music tutor at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is also a regular tutor at ProCorda, Aboyne Cello Festival and NLMS Summer School.
Sally Birkett (Halsey) is a highly sought-after chamber musician and accompanist, and is an enthusiastic and respected teacher. Sally has regularly worked as accompanist on residential courses – including the Aboyne Cello Festival (since 2010) working with Alice Neary, Phil Higham and Rebecca Gilliver, and Flutes in Tuscany (since 2016) with Rowland Sutherland, Wissam Boustany and Philippa Davies. She has also accompanied for Frances Mason, Richard Studt and Philip Dukes during similar string coaching.
Sally has worked in duo partnerships with several cellists performing many of the great cello and piano sonatas, throughout the UK and abroad. She has accompanied numerous other instrumentalists and singers in concerts, exams and auditions at all levels.
She has also been Repetiteur and Musical Director from the piano for many peer-led opera projects, both during her time at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and since graduating. A highlight was a tour of the comic opera The Old Maid and The Thief by Menotti with performances in London, Cheshire and the Isle of Wight. Sally has always loved working with singers as well as instrumentalists, and was a finalist in Lieder and English Song Duo Competitions whilst at Trinity Laban.
With a passion for chamber music, Sally has performed Piano Trios by Chopin, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn, and the Schumann Piano Quintet.
